On my first trip to Africa in 2001, I met a lovely young Ugandan mother named Grace. Her husband had died of AIDS and consequently Grace was HIV positive. She struggled to provide for her three children and feared for their future after she died.

On October 19, Scott Neeb of Colorado ran 26.2 miles in the Denver Marathon and raised $2700 for Children of Grace. Scott and his family sponsor a child named Esau in Uganda. He combined his love of running with his passion for the orphans in Uganda and sent a heartfelt letter to friends and family requesting they sponsor his marathon run by donating to Children of Grace. Donations and good wishes poured in for weeks before race day.

A team of 27, including 14 adults and 13 teenagers from Community Presbyterian Church in Danville, CA visited Uganda in August. During their two-week trip, they supported the work of Children of Grace by conducting a vacation Bible school event attended by 150 COG sponsored children. The team also visited many primary schools and a health clinic, and helped to build a house for a family in need. In addition, they ran a camp retreat for approximately 50 teenagers who are sponsored through COG.

Nabirye Margret, age 42, whose husband died of AIDS in 1995 cares for four orphaned grandchildren whose parents also died of AIDS. Her basic challenges are providing food for the family, paying rent, and paying school fees. She started the Children of Grace Empowerment Program in February of 2008 and after a two-week training was given a loan of $90 to start up a small produce business selling sweet potatoes and mangos.
